questions on vents...

nasr_36 Oct 09, 2003 08:57 PM

I have decided on ventrimaculatus as my first thumbnail sp.

A few questions...

1) How many would fit comfortably in a 20g high tank?

2) Whats the best ratio between M/F for breeding?

3) At what age is it necessary to breed?

4) Should i turn the tank on its side for more height? (its 16" high BTW)

5) How many bromeliads should i put in the tank? And particular sp?

6) Will the frogs come to the ground when its feeding time? Or should i drop the FF at the higher end of the cage?

...Thats it for now.

Thanks for the help,
M.N

Let answers a couple, I do not have vents, but they about the same as imitators.

I'd pick up a 15gal high, they are very cheap, but offer the heigth without the trouble of sealing a 20g on end.

My guess is that 4 would be fine in a 15gal high. I currently have 2 and they do not use the whole tank all that much.

I think they can breed very young, as early as 5 months.

Just dump the flies in they will find them. Mine are not on the ground that much, but they have no problem finding food in the tank.

I do not use any broms in my tank, but I might change that. I had a few people tell me not to use them, and a few tell me to use them. I like my tank, but they are hiding in places that are very tough to find them.

A couple of my suggestions:
1. use ver fine gravel, my imitaors like to move the larger gravel and then hide down in it. I almost have this stopped. I am going to remove the plant they are doing this under, for fear of one of them getting stuck under a rock.

Thanks kyle,

The reason i thought they needer broms was for breeding. Is it neccessary? Or will old film canisters work?

I might not have alot of room for more plants...but i'll see what i can do.

Hello. Good Choice. I have been working with this species for two years and currently have about six breeding pairs and over a hundred tads in the water right now. Heres some help.

1. I keep 2 pairs per 10gallons and have never seen any aggressive behavior.
2. I keep a 1:1 ratio always and it seems to work.
3. I have had a few start breeding (males) at 3 months and females at about 6-7 months old.
4. You could- they climb a lot. try a hex tank- conserves space and gives more height.
5. I use smaller sp. of neo.'s for broms, but go with bigger sp. if space allows. I keep about 2-3 in with them. Soetimes they sleep in or on the brom cups
6. They don't actively forage for prey like other darts. I use day old crickets and various sizes of Fflies. This way they can catch prey on the ground and in the "canopy". I place food in many places throughout the tank also so that they have access to it.

Feel free to email me with any other questions.

Good Luck

Thanks for the help.

I also have lots of dry bamboo, and am wondering if the vents will use it? I have lots available from my day geckos tank. I might continually (in a parallel) glue them from one end of the tank, to the other for more height. Sound like a good plan?

Thanks,

M.N
