feeding

jjayne Apr 05, 2006 08:04 AM

hi i have had my sibe for a two weeks now and having a bit of a problem keeping her motions solid, the breeder i bought her of was feeding her fresh rice and chicken but i think that she should have a better balanced diet than that and so does my vet, she also does'nt seem to be bulking up on it either she is quite thin. i have tried to slowly intoduce chicken and rice of the dried food formulated for puppys with sensative stomachs and her stools are still very soft bordering on runny. i have also given her a scambled egg , with the advice of the breeder, it works but only till the next feed. Is it a case of putting up with it while introduceing dried food or try somethig else. By the way her name is kimoki.

Hi! A puppies stomach can be extremely sensitve. I would continue to very slowly introduce the dry food into Kimoki's diet and note any changes in the stool. Hopefully they begin to firm up. Continue to stay in contact with your breeder and post an update here when you can. Good Luck!!

Two weeks isn't long enough to make everything "solid" at this point. You are dealing with two issues- stress from being relocated and a new diet. Keep up on feeding the kibble you have chosen and do not give any other food to this dog. It's just going to have to run it's course at this point. Give it another 2 weeks and all should be normal.

Sibes have very sensitive digestive systems.

Every time you try something new, you're messing with that and it's causing the loose stools.

My suggestion is find a good quality dry food with rice as the grain (more easily digestible) and stick with only that. I use Pro-Plan and it works nicely. Also, don't be concerned if your Sibe skips a day or two without eating and then pigs out (wants multiple meals) the next. I offer 1.5 cups of Pro Plan morning and evening. If she doesn't eat in the morning, it stays there until evening or the next day. I don't normally coerce her to eat by adding "yummies" to it (like canned food or cooked chicken or broth) unless I'll be gone for the whole day and I want to be sure she eats.

Puppies will seem a LOT skinnier than a grown dog, so don't worry about that unless she's not eating at all for days and days. They fill out around 2 years of age (muscle).

The advice I gave above is for a grown dog. I believe a puppy probably won't turn down many meals, but they might occasionally. It's been a while since mine was a pup!
