How big does the snakes head need to be for small rats?

LeeFobes Oct 09, 2003 09:09 PM

Im REALLY close to getting small rats, but looking for more answers. will a 450-520 gram male (i dont have a scale) be able to eat a small rat (90-120grm.)?? im worried that his head/throat area will tear open. please re assure me that this will not happen. Do they not kill what they cant eat? im going to just buy one small rat and see if he eats it. then i will finsih up the mice (all 10, that will last about 4 weeks, i feed him twice a week).

You dont need to refer to the size of the snakes head, refer to the "widest" part of his/her body. Snakes are very adept at swallowing large prey. I have a Tiger 0.1 that when I purchased her she weighed approximately 100 Grams ( I cant remember exactly) and she can eat a small rat, past the pup stage. fully haired, eyes open, ect. If you are really in doubt locate a reptile store (not pet) and take him/her in there and let them see just how big she is,and they can recommend the correct size.

My two '03 babies are around 250g and 200g, and both are taking 60g-90g rats. If your snake can't handle it, it will back off the rat.
Consider yourself reassured!
