A new puppy and an over excited 1 yr dog

Inukisdad Apr 15, 2006 10:01 AM

We have a Dobe who is just over a year (Inuki), and just brought home another Dobe pup, Konstantine (10 weeks). They get along fine, but Inuki is so hyper that she does not listen to our commands and will not leave Konstantine alone. If we separate them, Inuki whines until she is with Konstantine. We are not sure what to do about this. Suggestions on how to get our older dog to listen to us and calm down.

Let her whine. They need time apart. Sounds like your older dog is a male and the younger a female. Excellent. Read my article "Two Puppies or One?" for how to manage two dogs and be a happy family! The link is below my siggy.

Another issue, the 2 dogs are playing roughly all the time unless they are separated and we are unsure if this will continue or if it just an adjustment period?

This breed is high-powered and not body-sensitive. There's a big size difference between the dogs at this point, and they are getting to know each other. The younger dog is going to keep changing rapidly for quite some time, so the getting to know each other will have to continue. You should plan on continuing to supervise their interactions for quite some time.

They should not be alone together until the pup is somewhere between 4 and 7 months of age, and it might take longer. That's not as big an issue as you might think, since housetraining and prevention of destructive chewing habits will call for crating her when you can't supervise her until past that age anyway.
