One Cataract

Cocook Apr 18, 2006 12:16 PM

My shih tzu developed in the last month or so a cataract in one eye - doesn't quite cover the pupil. She is only 4 years old. Should I be concerned? Her vet checkup, etc. is in July, should I be going before?

I just went to the vet and she has a scar on her cornea - much less serious than juvenile cataracts. They measured it and when I go again this summer for her shots they will see if it is growing. Apparently she might have gotten a scratch on her cornea and this is the way it heals - the spot might never go away but as long as it does not grow and cover her whole eye, she is fine.

Oh, that is much better news, Donna. Hopefully, it won't bother her at all.

Donna, don't know if you missed it while you were away but there was a big discussion on cataracts on our board when it was discovered that Ayla has cataracts in both eyes. You might want to check those posts out as well. The latest thread is..Eye Specialist today. There is also another thread but it may be off the first page by now.

Thanks Mary Lou - I did miss that. You will see by my other post that she does not have a cataract - it is a scar from something on her cornea. That is good news in a way.

I just read it, Donna. Glad it's a less serious problem. I was always worried about Katie injuring her eye when she use to dig...especially in the sand. I was always afraid she would get the sand in her eyes but perhaps she closed them when she was digging.
