How to put weight on a dog

cee4 Apr 19, 2006 07:26 PM

My Italian Greyhound is just sooo skinny. She is active and full of energy. But I can see every muscle and every rib and even her backbones. She eats plenty of high protien puppy food and canned food..She is wormed and has all her shots, very healthy otherwise..I realize these are thin dogs I'd just like to see a little bit more meat on her..Ive seen others and they seem not to be quite as thin as her..

HI!

How old is your IG? Depending on her age, she may just not have filled out yet. Have you discussed your concern with your vet? I don't have IG's, but the big guys, greyhounds. One of my girls is extremely thin, can count every rib on her and see her muscle, but the vet says it is just the way she is and not to worry about it.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

Every time I take a dog to the vet, I ask him to check the dog's condition to tell me if the weight is okay, too high, or too low. He can feel things I cannot, such as how much fat is around the internal organs, muscle condition, etc. I highly recommend doing this. If you're concerned now, take the dog in just for this check up. You don't want to make her too fat, either, especially during growth.

She had put some wieght on this last winter and looked perfect.Remember she is a rescue and is about 8-9mnths old now..Its been about 3mnths since her last vet appointment and I was told she looks fine.I do live in the country and the vets are primarily large animal but they do the basic dog stuff too.Dont know how much experience the vet has had with IGs.

She has become much more active because the weather is nice I let her out front for romps. She is just running it all off.She wears the other dogs out and is still ready for more.I was just thinking she needed more calories, maybe some snack before bed that would help give the extra cals she seems to be burning so fast..

Try either Purina One/Pro Plan or Eukanuba Premium Performance. They're all nutrient dense, high calorie, high protein foods. I have a German Shepherd that came to me so malnourished and fraile (and with rickets) it was a miracle she was still living. Especially the Pro Plan worked wonders in not only getting her healthy and strong, but it also grew her coat in as thick as it had ever been.
