Need some advice/info...

lil_animal_gurl Apr 22, 2006 07:25 PM

Okay, so I went to a shelter sponsored dog walk thing at the park today with some of my fellow vet tech students to do nail trimmings/earcleanings and such. One of the ladies there brought her siberian to the park and I got to spend some time with it, and I realized that I really like siberians. They seems to have a lot of personality, and let's face it, they're just plain gorgeous! I think I would really like to have one. Not right now, of course, I was thinking after I graduate and have the chance to save up the money for one. It is quite a way off from this standpoint, but i want to start collecting as much info as I can before actually getting one. Could anyone give me a little bit of info about them? You know, the usual... Good foods to feed, how to train them, when's the best age to aquire one... what their personality is like... the works. Anything you would like to share would be great!

Hmmm...
They are generally very friendly and have a very nice disposition, however they can also be very cunning/devious when it comes to getting away with things they know they are not supposed to do.
They are also master escape artists, so even if you think you have dog proofed your yard, your husky will soon demonstrate otherwise.
They are very playful and energetic and love excersize.

I feed Eukanuba, adult maintenance large breed in the spring/summer and premium performance large breed in the fall/winter(we are amatuer skijor racers... well I should say my dog is a racer... I ski along behind and wish I was home on the couch )

I wouldn't trade my husky for anything

Hello!

Be prepared to deal with a lot of destruction--digging holes and tearing things apart, inside and out. Never leave your husky pup "on the loose" when you have to be away. I did that recently and came back to discover he had eaten the side off of my mattress. A good metal crate is a must-have when you need to leave him.

Be prepared to expend LOTS of energy--two walks a day should keep him happy and out of too much trouble. A yard to play in is a must, too. With a very secure fence.

A good grooming tool like a long toothed comb and a shedding blade for his twice yearly sheds.

I boil some inexpensive chicken or beef brisket to add to his dry dog kibble. Also my husky loves yogurt. These are very good for him, and such an active dog needs more than just plain kibble.

Well--those are just a few ideas to get you started! Hopefully someday you can enjoy your very own Husky! Oh yes--they are SO funny. They have this little "grin" on their faces that is so adorable. They do the craziest things. They don't bark much but like to "talk" and occasionally howl. They love to counter-surf--standing up on their hind legs.

I've got to go for now, but if you want to know anything else just ask! Here or at my personal email.

Yes, Huskies are the best dog in the world, in my opinion. I currently have 3 so they pretty much entertain each other at this point. But we've gone through some destructive phases. And yes, my backyard looks like the surface of the moon. I had to lay cement pavers along my privacy fence to deter them from digging out. And it seems to work. They haven't dug out in over a year and a half. {knock on wood} But they do still dig in the yard in random areas. Oh well!!

My huskies have a doggy door so they run in and out all the time. I do not nor have ever crated mine. Yes, I had quite a bit of furniture destroyed but I try not to stay away from the house more than 4 hours at a time. And we play hard when we are home. My huskies are all 3 years old so they have really settled down in the last 6-7 months.

And there is nothing in the world than when you come home and they "howl and sing" to you because they are so happy to see you! Makes me laugh each time. I love husky hugs!!
