How many superworms for "maintenance diet"?

ClayC Oct 09, 2003 09:30 PM

Ok, after years of feeding crickets to my Leos, Ive gotten to the point where I dont need to buy them in bulk anymore (reduced my numbers), and I really dont like keeping stinky crickets anyway. So Ive switched my Leos over to superworms. All of them seem to love them, but Im wondering. How many superworms should I feed each of them (they are all adults) at each feeding to keep them happy/healthy? They are all full grown, so all I need is enough to maintain their weights really.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Clay

Before my leos started slowing down their eating for the seasonal change, 50 would last my two adults for about a week. That also accounts for the ones that die or eat each other.

My only issue with using supers as a staple diet is that some leos might have some problems. I tried to get my third adult started on a superworm diet. She would eat them, but it also seemed like she would have to yawn and flex her body to shove it down. She is a full-grown adult, too. So just in case, I cut back on the superworms and started keeping mealworms in a bowl. I do that with my other two adults now.

depending on the animal. Some of my adults eat 8-10 superworms three times a week, I have others that eat 3-4 three times a week. I have a huge male blizzard that only eats 4 or 5 superworms a week and he maintains his hugeness. I also have a few adult leopard geckos that will not have anything to do with superworms, they do not like them at all, but will chow down on crickets or mealworms all day long. So you see it really just depends on the individual leo.

I think superworms are great as a staple for adult leopard geckos. They are much higher in protein than regular mealies and are almost as nutritional as crickets.
