excitement pee

diemnn May 07, 2006 01:02 PM

Does anybody have a problem with their Husky having little accidents when they get excited. It happens only a little bit with Cleo. When she gets really excited for whatever reason, she will pee just a little, even if we have already taken her out to pee. Is there a way to train her to stop doing that?

This is common in submissive puppies, especially females. Be sure to have her checked for infection. Infection is common, and it makes the problem worse. Never, ever, ever try to "break" her of it, or punish her in any way, even a harsh look. This is an involuntary submissive response. If you punish her, you can strongly set it, because you would be pushing her to become more and more submissive. If you ignore it and help her out by distracting her and not letting people hover over her when they come in, etc. she will most likely outgrow it. This is not a housetraining problem, and likely is not even a conscious act. It's a strong puppy instinct. It helps keep adult dogs from killing puppies.

My girl did it for a while(can't even remember how long) and we jsut ignored it and it eventually stopped. With ehr as long as we could distract her from laying on her back she wouldn't do it. And yes,she would roll over and pee on herself, you'd think that itself would have broke her off it

My Chani did that for a while too. There are a couple things you can do to try and change her behavior. The first is to ignore her for a few minutes when you first get home. Don't pet her and don't play with her. After she's had a few minutes to cool down get down on your knees and pet her. If she's doing it while your playing with her, you can get her to sit down and chill out for a few minutes just before you think she's about to have an accident. You can also try teaching her some tricks to give her a little more confidence. Good luck.

I have a male who does this every now and then. He will roll over on his back and piddle a little. Like the author said, it's a submissive position so please do not discipline him. My Nicademus will even do this sometimes when it's time for the monthly flea med application. I think he gets nervous. But it's something that they can't control, just make sure he is healthy and doesn't have any infections!
