Too much time Alone ???

jesse_keech May 12, 2006 08:47 PM

Hi everyone, I am currently looking to buy a female chi, but am worried that when i am at work for 6 hours that is too much time for her to be home alone.

1. Does this seem like too much time to be in a pen 4 times a week? Some days that 6 hours would be shorter like 4 or so.

2. How big of a area should she have to feel comfortable in those 6 hours? I can make a doggy door for an outside area but would not want the possibility of her getting out, stolen, or hurt while i am gone.

3. Any advice when buying a chi? What things I would need ect. Thanks for any help guys !

An adult dog could sleep that long, but a puppy would need potty breaks. A portable exercise pen is always a good thing to have with a tiny dog, and you can experiment with size and location because it's so adjustable.

I think your schedule will be fine. (Dogs that are NEVER left alone are by definition dysfunctional.)

If you get an older puppy, say 5 months or so, it'll probably be perfect - as long as it's not a special needs dog - like one of those microscopic "teacups". But even with a baby your schedule will work out ok .

BUT you can't expect a baby to go that long without peeing, etc... so leave her in a small room like a bathroom with a baby gate (not a closed door). Leave papers down in an out of the way spot - but never encourage the use of them or scold if they're not used. The papers are only there in case they can help in the clean up. If she doesn't use them, she doesn't..

Eventually, when she's old enough give her moe freedom inside if she's not going in the house.

Best of luck

We did this with out boy chi, it took a little longer to completely potty train him, but we can now leave him out in the house alone and he doesn't mess anywhere. only when he gets super stressed or its raining outside! lol
