Yorkie pregnant

59brooklyn May 25, 2006 10:23 AM

Hi, I found this site and am very concerned about:
1. Can they still be given their monthly heartworm dose without affecting the pups? And while breast-feeding also can they be given their monthly heartworm dose.

2.She attacks 2 of my 6 Yorkies just for the heck of it. Now that she is pregnant, she attacks more and the closer she gets to her giving birth and then afterwards, she literally attacks. Now I know it's normal to protect your pups but when no one is paying her any attention, she has 2 dogs she particulary attacks. has anyone every heard of such?

Hi,

I really don't know much about breeding dogs, but I'd contact my vet on these questions. Only a vet is qualified to answer questions about medications.

I'd also keep the dogs separated at all times. She was agressive before and cannot be trusted around other dogs...especially when you are not at home. One of the dogs could be seriously hurt. Just my opinion here.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

Thank you so much for taking your time out. I greatly appreciate it. I did ask my vet and they didn't know and gave me an 800 number to call Revolution (which is the heartworm they take) and their response was that they wouldn't think it would affect the pups. So I never got a straight answer from the vet or the REvolution people. I was just hoping someone on this forum knew for sure. I also just wanted to know if it was normal for a Yorkie to do this, as I find it strange for a Yorkie to attack. It seems out of their league. Again, I appreciate your time in responding.

For your first question, I'm not 100% sure the heartworm meds are safe during pregnancy, but my hunch is it is fine.

As for the aggressio nyo uare seeing, well, when pregnant females do tend to get a bit more nervous and do tend to get aggressive towards otehr dog and even people at times. Keep ehr seperated from the other dogs. She doesn't need the stress ofthem around right now. Create a safe comphy den for her and let her rest. She may or may not get worse once the puppies are born.

Chelle, thank you so much for taking your time to answer me. I went ahead and gave her the heart worm since that seems to be the leading response that it should be fine. As far as the attacking, it comes on for no reason that I can think of. I stronly believe she is jealous because I know when I am petting her that if anyone even comes near us, she will attack, and I mean aggressively. I just find this very strange for a Yorkie. I decided after this pregnancy just to spay her. I can't take the chance with my tinies and I don't want to cage her either cause that's not fair to her. Again, I totally thank you for answering me. I wish her a safe and healthy pregnancy. I do hope her jealousy/fear issues get resolved relatively soon.

She would really probably benefit from some alone time in a crate or minimally locked in a room away from the other dogs.

I'd be extra careful once those puppies are born. Please don't let the other dogs near her then. She could get very protective of her litter. She's still a terrier even though she's small.
