Will my JRT like my cat in 5 years?

LEMANY13 May 28, 2006 08:19 AM

I've been reading up about our 3 month old JRT and have found a lot of sites stating that they have a keen instinct to kill animals and especially cats. Our Jack likes our cat right now but I'm in complete fear that one day when I come home I won't have a kitty anymore. She seems to be extremely jealous of the cat but loves her very much at the same time. They play all the time but sometimes the JRT gets a bit rough. The cat is declawed so I know he wouldn't be able to defend himself if she got way too rough. Is this a common occurance for a JRT to turn on a cat if it grew up with it?

You should never leave a JRT alone with a cat. That just goes with the breed. They were bred to be able to fight and kill foxes. When there's no fox around, a cat will do. Growing up with the cat is not going to prevent that risk.

I have a JRT. He was Raised with Cats, Rats, and Guiena pigs and a few other critters. I would never leave him alone with they we always made sure that our cats had a safe place to go to get away from him when we weren't home. Since your guys is only 3 mo old now is a good time to start teaching him that it is not a good Idea to attack the cat. But, that is no garuentee that he won't go after him they are bred to kill small animals and when there isnt' a wild one around a cat will do just fine. good luck.
Mushu is a little more difficult too he is half Beagle, one heck of a challenge.
