Coughing & Vomiting

rowantree May 29, 2006 07:21 AM

Since it's a holiday weekend, I can't just call the vet. My Aussie, who is a little over a year old, has been coughing late at night. It's a very harsh cough and sometimes it almost sounds as if she is choking. She's trying to vomit, is what she's doing, but it takes hours before clear fluid comes up. She's done this the past two nights. All night long this goes on, she's trying to vomit but nothing comes out until morning. Once she is able to vomit the clear fluid, she is absolutely fine all day and evening - until around 11pm - 12am. I don't think she has eaten anything she doesn't normally have and she's been drinking water and eating as usual. Has anyone ever heard of this? Her breathing is fine throughout the day. I'll be calling the vet tomorrow once they open but thought I'd post here just in case.

There are lots of possibilities on this and you do need your veterinarian. One thing to try is a meal at bedtime. She's housetrained by now I expect. Provided you give her one or two chances to potty after this meal and it's not too large (just divide off some of the food you would normally give earlier in the day and give it at this time), it shouldn't be a problem that way. Some dogs throw up when their stomach stays empty too long. This would simply take care of that one possibility.

Is your dog okay now? The yellow liquid indicates an upset stomach. I usually call the vet when the dog vomits (especially when it happened the first time)--if I don't know why. Often, a vet will say to not feed the dog for 24 hours and then to put them on a bland diet (boiled rice and chicken or ground beef). I hope your dog is doing better!

She's ok now. The vet's office said she could have eaten something outside that upset her stomach, but our yard is completely fenced in. The only thing coming in was a lot of cottonwood and we believe that's what caused the coughing & vomiting because we noticed she was chasing the cottonwood & trying to bite it. Now that the cottonwood has stopped, the coughing & vomiting has stopped as well. I'm pretty sure that's what it was! She's been just fine since then. Thanks to both of you for replying to my post!
