wonder what else is in my dog!

larke Jun 01, 2006 09:19 PM

I know she's a lab mix... just trying to figure out what else is in her, I call her bat dog or dingo dog because of the ears. And her coat is really rough, almost looks waterproof, not soft at all, and she has serious webbed toes

Darn near almost resembles a Pharoah Hound but I don't think they are found just anywhere... or are black... though that and the web feet can come from the Lab part. Sleek looking dog just the same.

The ears, maybe, could be from a pharaoh, but they're certainly not a common breed. You might want to post a picture on the pharaoh board and see what they think.

she looks german shepherd to me, got a side shot?

pharrow Jun 02, 2006 08:06 AM

Possibly basenji, though the coloring isn't the same as most basenjis. Does the tail curl up?

larke Jun 02, 2006 02:55 PM

yes, her tail curls up, almost exactly like our lab/shepard mix, but her coat isn't like either. Its really really .. .I wanna say corse, but its smooth, like plastic or something hard to describe that, well almost like the boning in feathers.
Also she "wears" her ears, depending on the day, both will be up, both will be down, or one up one down, when she was a few months younger (she's only a year) she would actually wear both to the center of the head, or one to center, one up, or vice versa, it became pretty funny. I'd ask her how she's "doing her ears" today We're in california and got her at a shelter, I don't know if that makes the possibilites of what she could be mixed with any different. She does a lot of things like the older dog, but her body and stance is a lot different. more musclar and wide/bulky. And hard to get a side pic of her, cause when I have the camera out she wants to attack it, plus she's a black dog

labs are supposed to have a hard coat to help shed dirt, mud and water.
how big is she?

I'm still saying lab/shepherd for now, how much of a curl does she have in her tail? and how old?

larke Jun 02, 2006 03:11 PM

hm, really I thought labs were a little softer. I have a friend who has a yellow lab and he's a lot softer than Nya. She's a year and probably 40lbs? Our other dog was the runt of the little so she never got to be full size of either a lab or german shepard.

vampella Jul 26, 2006 08:49 PM

I am gonna say Lab X shepherd. They both have rougher hair
There could be a little something else though. Also remember with shelter dogs we are all only guessing as to what breeds they are. But she's cute and you love her and thats all that matters.

she really looks mostly lab to me, with maybe a slight hint of shepherd.. I dont see anything in her that would cause her tail to curl.. but shepherds do carry their tail in a sort of hook

lab coats can differ, depends on how they were bred and for what, true working labs have a hard coat, pet quality and every show line lab I have ever met has had a softer coat.

She looks similiar in some of the pictures to my Mya (but it just might be the angle of the camera). But Mya's ears do not stand up like that at all. Nya may have some Australian Kelpie in her. I'll post a link for you.
Here are a couple pictures of Mya.

Sure looks like a pit mix (or some kind of 'bully' breed mix) to me! Would explain the muscular stocky build and short stiff coat that you describe.

My dog is a bull terrier/american bulldog mix and he's got those big bat ears too! He's solid white with pink ears and people frequently say that he looks like a giant albino batdog LOL

I see I didn't respond on this one. German Shepherd is a possibility. Labs have webbed feet. Labs and GSDs are both common among fence jumpers. I see someone mentioned pit bull. I don't see that at all. Their ears are normally dropped, and the skull tends to be quite broad.

Definately Shep/lab... there could be something else in there but I after seeing at least 20 different dogs/day for 6 years I would say without a doubt that there is shepherd in your dog.
