They sure do look colorful - are they easterns or ornates? I have seen ornates with that type of color - nice babies either way.

They don't look loke any eastern I've seen. Never heard of "pastel" before, either. The hatchlings shown look more like they might be ornate or florida babies.
Surely the person offering them for sale can show you pix of adults if he's charging such a price for the offspring...

Where is this ad? I couldn't find anything advertising "pastel" box turtles in the turtle classifieds.

I agree about "buyer beware". I think some people throw terms out there to attact buyer and there may be no basis for it. There is someone who was advertising carolina/ ornate cross hatchlings (can't remember if they were 3 toeds or easterns). The babies in the photos looked like they could have been eastern or three toed (probably eastern) and I saw no evidence that suggested ornate at all. I would view such claims with skeptism unless and until the breeder is willing to back up such claims with photos of matings, etc.
I keep ornates and three toeds together and I've never seen a hint of (sexual)interest between a three toed and an ornate. Maybe it happens and I would really be interested in knowing, but so far, I've never seen any hard evidence.

The ad I looked at was posted 10/7 by a Steve Clark and is on the second page of turtle classifieds, and is the only ad that mentions baby pastel easterns in the heading, so I'm assuming that's the one in question. There are a couple of pix of hatchlings but no adult/parent pix.

Found the ad, don't know how I missed it......

So whos this guy trying to fool? Those look like ornates, or maybe floridas. Nothing pastel about them, what a crock....

Andy799 Oct 10, 2003 10:16 PM

like i said before, i am suppose to be getting mine on thursday, i asked him about them being ornates or flordia's and he told me he had no idea if they were or not, he said he bought them off a dealer and they are suppose to be pastal easterns, he said he deals with easterns and they look like easterns to him??? he said he is sending me a 02' baby so it for sure will be showing signs of ornate, flordia, or if it is a eastern, he's always trying to sell exotic turtles, i'll post pics when i get mine

i have actually seen quite a few turtles that looked like three toed ornate crosees these are all wild caught and from missouri and texas localities. I think it happens pretty often in the wild.

LisaOKC Oct 10, 2003 06:42 PM

I live smack dab in the middle of a three toed and ornate habitat. I've never seen a three toed that looks anything like an ornate and vise-versa. Three toeds can have pretty patterns, they can have spots. Until I see them mating....

Lacy Oct 11, 2003 12:11 AM

I'll back you on that, Lisa. I live in Moore (just south of OKC) and I've never seen a cross btwn a three toed and ornate. I ALSO keep the two together in the outside enclosure, and they've never even looked like they WANTED to mate with eachother.

P.S. Man... I NEVER post anymore... I used to be on here every day. But full time college and a part time job (30 hrs / week) is eating up every spare moment of my leisure/computer time.
I mostly made time tonight to get on so I could announce that two baby three toeds hatched last night Babies are so darn cute... brings my total of turtles to 27!! Geeze... I need to start thinking about adopting some out to good people... maybe... Just maybe...

bloomindaedalus Oct 11, 2003 04:48 PM

Congrats on your babies!

As for the crosses they usually have the red/white heads and the carapace is tan with very obvious radiating lines and lots of markings on the marginals. Sometimes they even seem to have a dorsal stripe.

Many keepers report that they don't get cross breedings when there are animals of the same suspecies available to breed with.

I have seen contrary evidence though.
Next time i see one (sadly they are everywhere in pet shops here) i will photo it for you and we can debate if its just a pretty three toed or not.

Lacy Oct 12, 2003 12:52 AM

That sounds great
I actually have a three toed that sounds like what you described. I'll try to get a better picture of her and post it for you.
