Can you train a beagle...

kevynsmommy Jun 06, 2006 12:11 AM

I was wondering if it was actually possible to train a beagle to "hunt" for a person. As in can my beagle play hide and seek with my son. I think it might be great excercise for both of them, especially if I do a little "obsticle course" for both of them. I'm not really into hunting, but my beagle is very...uhh...nosy lol. I was wondering if I can actually get him to sniff out a scent I want him to for once. :-D

Actually, yes, beagles are very good at this game- it's called "tracking" and it's a womderful way to allow your beagle to use his nose and brain.

There are many many books on the topic and many obedience clubs have classes for it. My personal favorite book is called "Tracking From the Ground Up" by Sandy Ganz and Susan Boyd.
