First Shots

thrax50 Jun 06, 2006 07:30 PM

I'll be taking my 10-week old dachshund for her first shots soon and wanted to get a heads-up on the vaccinations she'll be getting.
Her first series include DHP-Parvo (i don't know what DHP is), Corona and Dewormer.
Second series includes DHP-Parvo, Corona, Bordetella, Dewormer
Third visit is the same except dewormer is replaced with rabies shot
And her yearly shots are dhp-parvo, corona, bordetella and dewormer.

I read online that female puppies should get the bordetella.

My questions are: 1)What is DHP?
2) Should she get the bordetella and rabies shot in her first series or in the sequence that its in?
3) Is this sequence ok? Or should each visit include something else like lyme, giardia or rabies?

Sometimes the reason for vets giving the Bordetella vaccine is for kennel cough and if you are going have you pet either at a boarding kennel, vaccination clinic, obedience class, local park, animal hospital waiting room, or grooming parlor. There shouldn't be a whole lot of concern for giving the Bordetella vaccine and the rabies shot. But I have to say there is some people that don't bother getting the Bordetella vaccine.

The vaccine section at the site below should give you more info.

Annual vaccinations aren't needed and are not even recommended by the vet schools. Many vets are still giving them though. You will have to educate yourself and decide what is best for the health of your dog.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to give an adult dog the corona vaccine, and it is questionable for older puppies.

I wouldn't give Bordatella, but would concentrate on raisinga healthy dog, as that is the best defense. Unless you board in a kennel that requires it, you don't need it.

I would not give the rabies at the same time as any other vaccination -- spread them out.

Giardia and lyme are thought to not be very effective, and I know from first hand experience the the lyme vaccine can cause a lifelong disease process. Actually, any vaccine can, but the lyme vaccine is known for this -- I'm not sure any vet school recommends it, and most (if not all) do caution about he side effects.
