OHHNO =( she injured herself

genaroleon May 27, 2003 07:44 PM

A friend of mine broke the plexyglass on one of my enclosures yesterday. I had an extra makeshift pannel that i used as a replacement "door" which covered the length of the tank but the plexyglass was not secure on the ends extreem ends of the tank. If my snake were to push agains it.. she would not be able to get out.. it created a half inch opening and shes WAY to big for that..
Anyway Last night I kept hearing a noise as if my snakes were hitting the plexyglass of the tanks .. i was half awake/asleep.. but when i checked nothing was going on.. snakes were either roaming around the cage or hiding. I came home today and took one of them out...NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Ontop of the head and ill say about maby 2 or so inches down from the neck (right on the backbone) the skin is rough and looks like some scales were torn off. It looks almost like a bad shed, but i know its from her trying to escape, realizing she cannot, then trying to get her head back into the tank... like she scraped her skin.
I have not had any injuries to any of my snakes in years... this is going to bother me for a while

Ahh... sometimes stuff happens... sounds like she'll be ok,
I would just put a little neosporin on the missing scales area.
One of my boas (a yearling) had a plastic vine in her tank, at
the end they have a loop of plastic, I figured it was way too
small for her... come into the snake room and she has her head
in it, halfway and was stuck, laying almost upside down and
scared me silly!! Luckily, I was able to wedge some sissors
in there and cut her free (I tried to get her to back out of it
but all she did was get herself squeezed in tighter) Her
head was mishapen for a day or two and for the next two sheds
her skin and scales stayed discolored. She made a full recovery
and I have since clipped off any 'loops' on my plastic plants.
Just watch for any huge changes in behavior and watch for any
oozing from the area of damage, if all seems ok, then your girl
sounds like she'll be fine.

Yeah im sure she will be fine. While i was inspecinting the scales she did not seem disturbed by me touching the damaged area. Im going to pick up some neosporin today... and work it into the area that has been disturbed. She just finished shedding a couple of days ago... so ill have some time to wait to see how good she heals =) Im sure she will be back to 100%
