Dry skin on my lab

mel_c Jun 18, 2006 09:14 PM

I used a flea spray from the pet store on my lab, while the fleas appear to be gone his skin is really dry and flaky especially near his hind legs. I am thinking it might be an allergic reaction to the spray - has anyone else experienced this and what can I do to stop his scratching?

You're Lab just might be having a reaction to the flea spray. You may have to make a trip to your vet if the flaking and itching persists, but you might try shampooing your boy with a good quality moisturizing shampoo and really rinse him well. I'm also a big fan of using Dermcaps with my dogs and have used them for years to keep the skin and coat healthy. They are fish oil capsule supplement that is rich in Omega 3&6. One last thing, if you do have to take your dog to your vet... they should be able to supply you with a good quality flea spray.

Dry skin is abnormal for Labs, since they have special oil to repel water from coat and skin. Scratching can do severe damage, and this problem can go deeper than skin, too. I'd get him to a vet, pronto.
