Dog with allergies.

rayama1 Jun 20, 2006 12:25 PM

My dog, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, has developed terrible allergies. she scratches all day. There are clumps of her fur that she's chewed out everywhere! Her allergy shots aren't helping. What can we do to help her? Can anyone recommend any medications for me to research and talk to my vet about?

Medicine in general will just screw up the immune system in an effort to supress symptoms. My old girl seems to have been allergic to something in the trash she had been fed before we got her; she was itchy and her coat was dull. We switched her to raw food and immediately she was better and has stayed that way ever since. Try just one kind of meat first, then wait a couple of weeks. If the problem goes away, keep adding one thing per week. If it stays, try a different kind of meat. Give flax or fish oil- I give my dogs both, and their coats are great. We just adopted a beagle and put her on organic flax oil and wild salmon oil, and yesterday we saw her foster mom at PetCo, and the first thing she commented on was how shiny her coat was. It's good stuff!!
