Malamute & Husky Sibiling Rivalry

Jade0480 Jun 22, 2006 09:39 AM

We got Seibin, our male malamute when he was 7 weeks old. He is now a year and three months. He has been pretty good on the exception of attention-getting annoyances. He also has take a liking to our neighbors puppies because he was bored and lonely. So 2 days ago we got a 4 mo old female husky named Aurora. Seibin has been how I expected him to be with bringing a new puppy in. He has been towering over her and attempting to show dominence by growling at her some and eating her food. Each instance we 'put him down' by making him lay down, telling him no and to not be mean to Aurora and telling him to calm down. For the most part, he still knows that my husband and I are the ones in charge, not him (he does forget occasionally... and did so even before Aurora). However, an incident happened this morning that has really worried me.

Aurora grabbed a squeeky toy that I purchased for her and Seibin has never had it. He heard the squeeky sound and literally attacked Aurora, barking and growling. He looked like he was going to kill her.

We have seperated them the only way we can... by putting her in the laundry room with all her necessities and opening the garage door so she will have a place to play.

I dont know what else to do. Please help!!

Christina

Dogs need to be separated for food and all highly-desired toys (whatever THEY desire enough to fight over--depends on the dogs which toys these will be). If you don't change to this management, he may well kill her. The dominance method of putting him down will not help the problem, and will create new ones.

Things change when you add a second dog. It is a different lifestyle than with one dog. No more rawhide chews left around, no more free-feeding, and each dog needs individual one-on-one time with you daily that includes training sessions away from the home. It is more than twice as much work to have two dogs as to have one dog, if you do it right.
