Climate Question

nuclear_adict Jun 23, 2006 09:50 PM

Alright so im going to be moving to a very warm and humid area, imperial valley, in california, temperatures are usually around 98-105 but can get up to 110-115 in th peak of teh summer, im wondering if a husky could survive in these conditions i know there a cooler climate breed but if with the proper shade, water, and treatment if they could survive in these conditions. I used to have a husky before but not in these conditions so i would want what is best for a dog and if i husky can not survive in these conditions i would choose another breed of dog for when i move. So what conditions doyou think a husky could survive in do any of you live in warmer areas like were im going to be moving???? any tips? Thanks.

No dog can "survive" in that heat without proper water, shelter, etc. We lived in the Phoenix area, and that is actually where we purchased our Nikki. Temps were the same as you described, without the humidity. Just take reasonable precautions. Don't leave your dog out when it's so hot, or if you must, you can set up a portable mister to cool him/her off. I'm including a link to what I'm talking about. They use very little water. Also, make sure they have shade, plants, cool earth in which to dig, and maybe a swimming pool. You can also set up a fan outside. You can even blow a box fan over a kiddie pool of water to make a primitive evaporative cooler. However, in the hottest weather, just leave them inside in the air conditioning. Crate training the dog will help. Again, it doesn't matter the breed. Whatever you do, DON'T shave your dog. They need their coat for insulation from the heat/sun just as much as for the cold. Just make sure you brush him/her regularly to remove the shedding dead hair of their base coat.

Here's the mister link below my name...

Portable Mister at Home Depot

go to http://www.homedepot.com and in the search window top right, type "mister" and complete the search. then, scroll down and click on the purple spiraly thing that says "Arizona Mist Cooling Stand".

alternately, you can set up an entire misting system for your patio, but that would be too much to leave on all day. I would place something heavy over the base of this stand so the dog can't knock it over, drag it around, etc. they're pretty cheap to replace, though...

it seems they're out of stock at homedepot.com, but you can search the web for "Arizona Mist Cooling Stand".

Thanks alot actually el centro california and phoenix have relatively similar climates sine there l so i think i will be fine i was worried but as you stated witht eh proper treatment im sure they will be just fine. ill deffinetly buy a misting system and a kid pool for them to play around and in extreme heat i was definetly not going to leave my dog outside so i think ill be fine.

Cool (sry, bad pun...)

Anyway, if you do the kiddie pool, make sure you change the water real often. Bacteria build up quick, as well as mosquitos. You don't need a lot of water in it...
