Eye color

pschuman Jun 26, 2006 07:59 AM

I am looking at purchasing a puppy and have found one I like. The only problem is the eye color. The breeder told me she had blue eyes but when I went to see the puppy, the eyes were very dark. The breeder then told me her eyes started to change and they can possibly end up a dark blue or a brown. I am just wondering what are the chances of them going to a dark blue or light blue. The puppy is now a little older then five weeks. Thanks

If they're brown now, they're not going to go blue. I think it can go the other way around (start blue, go brown), but I'm not sure.

Anyway, if it's a Siberian Husky, the breed standard says it can have blue eyes, brown eyes, or one of each (bi-eyed), like my Nikki, below.

If you absolutely have to have a dog with blue eyes, keep looking. If you love the dog and the eye color isn't that important, it's better you love the dog. Get it in that case...

every pup 5 weeks and younger I have ever seen has had blue eyes regardless of breed.

So I can count on her eyes to be brown. Their is a blueish greenish tint still, any chance of her eyes going green. I already am in love with this puppy, just am curious on what color her eyes will end up.

I've never seen a dog with green eyes. Could it have been picking up a reflection of a wall, carpet, or grass?

Like I said, if it's a purebred Siberian, you're looking at brown eyes. Either way, it sounds like you've made a new friend. Enjoy!

Actually, sibes can have green eyes, it is just pretty rare. The eyes are just very interesting to me right now, because I keep looking at photos I have taken and everyone seems to be different. Some have a blue tint, some have a brown, and a few even have a green. It's a Mystery!

The "blue" eyes of Siberian Huskies are not like the "blue" eyes of humans. They are the result of specific genes (called china eye in some breeds, wall eye in others).

The reason I mention this is that unlike other eye color in dogs - the blue of a Siberian is obvious from the moment it opens it's eyes.

Practical meaning >>> If you're in any doubt - they will not be blue.

The Liver gene, which is common in Siberians and called "red" is always associated with a liver brown nose and often a hazel or light gold eye. You've probably seen that effect in chocolate labs or german shorthair pointers.

Also, the combination of both recessive red and recessive liver (as seen in Vizslas and rednose red pitbulls) very often leads to a green or gold eye.
