Bladder Infection

demetrius Jun 26, 2006 03:48 PM

Hello ,
I am purchasing a 16 week old female pit bull puppy from a local breeder . Today the breeder called and told me that the puppy had a bladder infection and was at the vets . Tbe puppy will be on antibiotics for a few weeks. Is this puppy safe to buy ? What else should I do for her to help with the bladder infection when she comes home ? Will she be okay eating the BARF diet with a bladder infection ? Thanks .

It probably isn't uncommon for a puppy to develop a bladder infection and it's a good sign that your breeder called you before hand to let you know about it. As for the BARF diet... I don't use it so hopefully someone will be along that does... however at 16 weeks your pup should still be on a good puppy diet until at least 4-6 months of age. Good Luck with her and hopefully the infection runs it's course quickly.

The "BARF" diet is wonderful, I feed a version of it to my dogs. My husband and I had a pharaoh hound puppy a while ago, and he was weaned onto raw bones. Chicken bones were great because they're so soft and easy to chew (cooked bones of any sort are dangerous, but raw ones are fine). When we got our 8 year-old dog from my parents, who had eaten nothing her whole life other than cheap dog "food" and a few horribly greasy table scraps; we switched her to raw bones with no problem at all. So basically, raw food is very safe for dogs. Sure, the very, very rare dog will choke on a bone or get some type of "bug", but in my opinion this is a much better option than having my dogs die slowly of cancer after years of eating grain-laden commercial kibble (which is much more likely than choking on a bone or getting sick from raw food). Again, this is just my opinion. Read The Barf Diet by Ian Billinghurst. I feed a version of his diet to my dogs, half bones and half this mixture of everything in my kitchen. They love it, and they look and feel great. I would also suggest going to this site: http://home.att.net/~wdcusick/index.html. It's got a list of breeds and some really neat information about each one, plus a list of foods that they do well on. Good luck with your puppy and I'm so jealous! I'd love to have a pit bull one day.
