chew bones

3sweetys Jul 02, 2006 04:22 PM

I am wondering what the latest is on rawhide chew bones? I have heard they are bad for a dog. I have read they do everything from clogging up a dogs intestines to choking etc.. My chihuahua terrier mix dog (medium size dog 17 pounds) just loves the large chew bones and will gnaw on one for hours eventually softening up little tiny threads of it and eating tiny little pieces. I have refrained from buying these bones until today and she is happily gnawing on one right now, it made me wonder if anyone has had actual catastrophes directly associated with these rawhide chew bones.. NOTE , I am supervising her with it and if she gets a large hunk off (which I doubt) I will take the hunk away from her and not let her EAT it.. thanks for any personal experience information anyone can provide.

My dog used to get pieces that she would gag on, and I would have to grab them from being lodged in her throat and pull them out. I'm lucky that they never went far enough down that I couldn't get them.

There are also stories about what they are processed with perhaps being harmful to pets, but I don't know much abot that.

I then switched to nylabones -- all kinds made both of my dogs sick eventually -- they would throw up green bile stuff afte chewing on one.

I just give a raw marrow bone nowadays.

ok thanks. I still will let her have a rawhide chew bone because she loves it so much. But I will watch her closely with it. She does have 2 nylabones but does not like them she barely makes a few little teeth marks in those and cannot eat them so I know they will not make her sick..
