Are you looking for a certified behaviorist or a trainer? Board certified behaviorists are generally referred to you by your own vet. Trainers that call themselves behaviorists (they lack the degree) can be found via local humane societies typically.

If you are looking for a trainer that knows dog behaviour, the best thing to do is attend a class or two and watch what happens. As a starting point, I would find one that is a member of APDT, there site and directory is here: www.apdt.com, but being a member unfortunately still does not guarantee you've found a good trainer.

If you are looking for a medical behaviourist that can prescribe meds, etc. and has medical training, typically those are found at vet schools and, as Chelle said, your vet should have a referral number.

Just a note, most vets really don't know that much about behaviour, so you would want to find one that study behaviour if you ask a vet.
