Digging and circling

BellasDad Jul 13, 2006 01:20 PM

My wife and I just get a kick out of watching our Bella "dig" a spot to sleep in her bed. We have always wondered why she (all Sibes I assume) will more or less "dig" a spot where she is about to lay down. She doesn't do this every time, but a decent amount. She has a big dog bed next to our bed and she will get in there, circle around a good 4-5 times and then she'll dig a bit. What are the reasons behind this digging and circling?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

It's a strong instinct in dogs. One reason they do it is to hollow out a resting place that is cooler, that works to whelp puppies, possibly to remove rocks and debris from under them. It's not something they stop to think about. It is a "hard-wired" behavior.

I think it's a leftover instinct to dig a den. All dogs do it.
Even cats do it.
