how long will diharea last

monell Jul 16, 2006 03:56 PM

I switched to the raw diet two days ago. I have 2 standard poodles. I have tried just about all of the preminum kebble food. They might eat it the first day but that is all. I finally read a lot on the barf diet, and decided to switch. They love the raw chicken necks, backs and wings. BUT one of them has diarea. i understand it is comon when switching. but this morning he has some blood in it. Not a lot but some. Is this a normal thing? I want to stay with this if it is possible. at least they eat it good. When on the keebles they were lucky to eat 3 cups of food a day between them. My male is 13 months old and the female is 9 months old. I have been feeding them two times a day. At 5:30 am and 6 pm.

Give them a couple of weeks of feeding raw. My beagle has been eating raw for maybe about a month and a half, and she still throws up after eating sometimes. After eating kibble, dogs' bodies aren't used to getting such pure stuff. Give them plenty of time for their bodies to get used to digesting different stuff. Any time you're worried, call a holistic vet. They are much more knowledgeable and supportive of raw feeding than normal vets are.

did you do a cold switch? what kibble were they eating before?

I would add start adding probiotic with their meals to aid with their digestion. Adding some pumpkin (plain, not for pie, for fiber) into their diet wont hurt either.

re: blood, bright red blood in their stool is ok (usually). Deep dark blood is a trip to the vet.
