Dog Door Training a Yorkie

nkkid Jul 25, 2006 02:20 PM

I have a 4 year old female yorkie. She has had an electronic dog door for about 2 years. The door opens for her when she approaches and she can come and go as she pleases. We also got a black lab pup in April. The lab stays in a outdoor kennel when we are gone during the day and the yorkie stays in the house. She had accidents in the beginning after being trained to use the dog door so we put up a gate and contained her to the living room which is the room where her dog door is and she seemed to not have anymore accidents. Within the last 2 months she has started having accidents in the living room while we are gone and also during the night. She sleeps in the bed with us so at night she is contained to the living room and our bedroom. So we started containing her in a pen that leads to the dog door so she has a smaller area during the day. That seems to work but at night if we contain her near the door NOBODY gets any sleep. At night is the main time she has accidents now. ANY SUGGESTIONS???????

Start by having her checked medically. Urinary tract infections and hormonal urinary incontinence are common in female dogs, and respond well to medication in most cases. I also have articles on housetraining, including one on Housetraining Accidents, at the link below my signature. You may find that your method of treating the spots is part of the problem, and that is explained there. The site is an educational site maintained by veterinarians for their clients and doesn't try to sell you anything.
