The methods you mentioned leave out the most important part--teaching him what you DO want him to do. Read the article Jumping Up on People at the link below my signature for a method that should work just fine with a Lab. I also have an article there on Labrador Retrievers I think you'll like.

You have to teach him off, which for some can be harder than others. Lab's are very happy friendly dogs who want to be up at your face saying hello.
There are many different methods... pushing them off and saying off, ignoring them (turn your back to them ) and holding (gentle) their feet when they get up until the don't want to be there anymore(while saying you wanted up, your here now...you don't like it) then placing their feet on the ground and saying off. I tried everything with my Shep X and I had secess with feet holding. ignoring did nothing for my dogs but did for others.
I also on top of it, when I put her down and tell her off make her go into a sit stay and return in a few mins to "break" her out of the stay. I always redirect the bad behav with a good one.
One more thing, If you aren't already touch desensitizing(sp) your pup start now. touch him all over, pull on loose skin, play with lips, ear's tail even gentle pulls on ears and tails. and play with those feet. This will make your veterinarian happy and make you very comfertable that if a child ever does pull an ear or tail or even fall on him, there will be no reaction from your pup.
Have fun with your pup and if you aren't already in classes, I recommened it as it's great for bonding and keeping your puppy out of trouble.
I just graduated from basic manners with my 6 month old (today) shep X lab. Next month we are starting Canadian good neighbour classes and then going into therapy work providing we pass the st.johns ambulance test.
Would love to see a pic of your pup.

Thanks for the advice. I thought I was pretty good with computers but I can't figure out how to post a picture of my lab or I would show you a pic.
Thanks
