susan butcher....iditarod legend passes

pita&sassy Aug 06, 2006 12:35 AM

hello everyone,
i normally post on cat forums, but living in alaska i live among many dogs and dog lovers. today is a sad day for our state. i'd like to tell you why....

a true champion passed away today from leukemia. her name was susan butcher. i know many do not consider dog mushing a true sport, but trust me...if you have ever witnessed it, you would know it is a sport for both man and dogs. she was the second woman to win the iditarod, and went on to win 3 more times. this in a sport dominated by mostly men.
she and her husband (also a musher) always took great care of thier dogs. other mushers used to say she was the only musher that could get her team to parallel park.

so i just wanted to let you all know what a truly wonderful person she was, and that she will be truly missed.

Hi... I heard this announcment on ESPN last night and was saddened to hear the news of her passing. Of course I don't know a lot about mushing but did watch some of the Iditarod over the years and I was amazed at the skill and technique required from both the musher and the dogs. A true legend in the sport is gone and she will be missed a great deal.

The sport lost a legend. I'm so sorry to read this post. I hope Susan is up there with her favorite team from years past looking down on the rest and smiling.
