Making Dog Toys... Opinions needed!

embibble Aug 13, 2006 09:27 PM

At the store today there was a neat little purple monkey (dog toy) that rather then squeak when pressed, it makes a horrific howel/cry noise... I knew it was a perfect match for my dog.

Anyways I checked them over and found one that was in good condition.

I brought it home gave it to the dog (it indeed was a perfect match) and the relized the terrible job they did stitching up the back. I don't know how I missed it- I must have checked the front arm/legs/face but missed the back end. The threads are loose and about 1" apart from each other. One stitch seemed to be missing all togeather. So I carefully stitched it up my self, then the idea hit me. Why not just make my own dog toys? I imagine I could make them more durable and cheaper then the commercial ones!

I chose some regular cotton fabric but it turns out my dog doesnt care for the texture.

Nows the time for your opinions!

What fabric type do you/your dog prefer on your dog toys? Later, After trying out a few old stuffed animals, and examining previous dog toys - my dog seems to like the more fluffy fleece types of fabrics.

Are there any fabrics that are toxic that I should not use?

That monkey I mentioned earlier is made of some sort of terry-cloth like material, looks like you could make a lamb out of it. Anyone know what material that is?

I buy cheap stuffed animals at garage sales all summer long. My dogs like to de-stuff on a regular basis. They don't seem to have a preference as long as it can become a fabric carcass in the end

I have found plastic soda bottle filled with a tiny bit of water to be a great toy for them as well as the inner cardboard from a paper towel roll. Of course, sock that have srpung a hole in them are also a great toy to be tugged with.
Imagination is the key and my dogs never seem to tire of anythig I come ups with.
