Growling

Harrison88 Aug 16, 2006 09:14 AM

Hello all,

I have a Cocker Spaniel called Jasper. He's 1 year 8 months old and we got him from the breader at the start of March 2005. He was born on 1st January 2005.

Anyway, recently if we tell him to come, or he does something wrong and we have to tell him off he starts to growl. He won't look at my dad but he stares at me, my brother and my mum. Sometimes after telling him off and we tell him to go to his bed he'll start growling at his from his bed (which is in the kitchen) while we are telling him off.

Jasper's meal times are strange. We'll sit down for dinner and he'll sit next to one of us. Once we're done if he doesn't get any left overs he jumps up to see if the plates are gone from the table. My mum gives him is food in his bowl, sometimes he'll eat it, others he'll just leave it till later or won't even touch it. That get us a bit worried.

Jasper will pine for us if he's locked in the kitchen (where his bed is) and we have guests round, or we lock him outside.

Also, he's very jumpy when we get in from work, school, etc and cries at the door until we open it and go and see him. He pretty much won't listen to my orders (from me) when he's out walking but listens to them most of the time in the house. (Especially if we have treats in our hands).

He's very protective too. If me and my brother is fighting or just messing around, he'll start balking and jumping up, he might even start growling at one or both of us.

We've never been able to teach him to fetch. He'll go and get it, then run off each time we walk towards him, or he'll run off when he gets close to us and we go to take it off him.

Do you have any tips for us? My dad's getting pretty angry with Jesper because the fact he's growling and none of my dad's previous dogs have ever done that. Even the one's three times the one size of Jasper. I'd hate to have my dad take Jasper away, because of something we might be able to train him out of.

Sorry for the long thread!

Oh and, my mum's taken him to some local training classes but he didn't really learn all that much other than the regular sit, down, etc. He will sit when you say it, but the other commands (which we're taught him too) he'll only do when he wants to.

He needs different training techniques than the ones being used on him. Best thing I can suggest is finding a different class or trainer. I have a lot of training articles, and one on Training Classes at the link below my name. It's a free educational site, run by veterinarians.
