AKC or other pure breed certificates

chani Aug 18, 2006 03:11 AM

I have been researching pure breed certificates but I am a little confused. Is it possible to get an AKC certificate (or other reputable organizations' certificate)if neither of my dogs parents have AKC certificates? I looked on their site but it seems to say both yes and no...My dog is registered with a foreign organization which isnt recognized in the US if that makes any difference.

The answer is "yes" and "no." It really depends on the other registry your dog's parents are registered with. AKC only accepts a few foreign registries and it can be breed specific.

It also depends on what type of registration you are looking for from AKC- or any other organization for that matter. If you want ot breed your dog and have the puppies registerable, there are a lot of "hoops" you need to go through and that is not a guarantee to get papers from AKC. If you just want to be able to do performance events through AKC venues, The paperwork and such is a lot less. That paperwork does require the dog ot be neutered or spayed though.

So, it's a fuzzy answer to your question, but the best I can give. It really depends completely on the reputation behind the registry your dog comes from and your intentions for AKC registration.

I'm curious, since none of my dogs are purebred why would you want to register your dog with any of the "KC" organisations?
I understand that you need it for certain shows and what not... but for your average pet owner is there any benefit?
I'm just wondering because I've met people before who are obsessed with having there dog registered as a pure bred dog.

I personally have my dogs registered with a few organizations: AKC and UKC for example. MY reasons are because I do performance events in those venues. For the average pet dog where the owner has absolutely no intention of showing their dog in obedience, flyball, agility, etc with those venues, there is absolutely no need to go through the process of registering a dog that isn't already registered in my humble opinion. If a person is intending on breeding their dog and it does not have a specific registration associated with it, then I's question why it doesn't and question why it should be bred in the first place. If it can't better a breed, it should not be bred. (I know I'm asking to get flamed for this).

I agree with this, about breeding unregistered dogs. I know it sounds so hoity toity for us to say stuff like this but my reasoning is for one thing, there are just too many mixed and purebred dogs in shelters, also I never adovate breeding a dog whose background you don't know, as you cannot guarantee health, temperment, or anything in the puppies. Although I don't think it's right to tell people what they can and cannot do I hope that a little information can make people think twice about breeding their dogs. The main thing I try to get acorss to people is how much work it is and how heartbreaking it can be!!

What are your reasons for wanting to register? If you want to compete in events it is a good plan to try but if you just want to registration papers for a pet I wouldn't bother, it can be very frustrating If you cant get the papers there are tones of activites you can still do with your pup! What registry are the parents registered by?
