Black spots on skin of GSD

mammamace Aug 25, 2006 01:01 PM

I have an 11 year old long haired German Shepherd who recently developed itchy skin. It wasn't flaking or inflamed. We groomed her ourselves a few days ago, and gave her an oatmeal bath to see if that would help. While grooming her, we noticed that she has large, round black spots on her skin. They are mostly on her underside, near her rear legs. The consistency on some, but not all, is like wax, and it smells.

These don't seem to bother her though, as her itching seems to be everywhere else! She is losing her fur in big clumps, and now she has some redness and fur loss on her lower hind legs. She eats Nutro Ultra for Seniors, so I know it's not from improper nutrition. We've also started supplementing her food with fish oil to see if that would help.

We will be taking her to the vet tomorrow morning, but I was curious to know if anyone has had experience with this. Our research showed it could be a multitude of things. Again, please share your story if your pet has had this!! Thanks.
