Anyone have experience with a 'skin tag'

nealdolson Aug 26, 2006 12:00 AM

A few months ago I saw on my dog what I thought was a decent sized tick. Well I tried removing it and my dog yelped and didn't like it. I took a picture of it and posted it on another message board, and I was told it was probably a 'skin tag'. It looks like a long tick/weird nipple thing. It's probably 1/3 an inch now, but doesn't seem to be putting him in any pain. It looks kind of gross though. If I can find a picture I'll post it up. Anyone ever heard of this? My dog is due for a vet visit...is this going to be expensive to remove this? If it's anything like a wart, I would imagine it's just like 'freezing' it off?

Thanks!

Weird... post when you find out, I've never heard of it.

Cost depends on how easy the dog is to handle. If the veterinarian can do it under local anesthetic, not very expensive. If the dog would fuss too much for that, then you have the cost of anesthesia. If the vet is not 100% comfortable saying it's benign, I'd have it sent for laboratory analysis. That adds to the cost, but can be great insurance it if regrows.

My dog had a wierd thing like that, only it was very dark colored. She was in for removal of a lipoma and they took that "tag" off at the same time. The doc said when he poked it, it bled like crazy....he hadn't a clue, but it healed just fine and hasn't returned. I'm glad I had it removed.

I also noticed a growth that looked like a tick on my dog's lower back. It turned out to be a skin tag which I had removed while she was under anesthetic for her dental cleaning. The cost of the removal and cauterization was $75.00, including removal of 3 sutures. I don't know if I would try to use a local anesthetic on some dogs, as the buzzing sound and smell of the cautery may scare them. Anyway, the spot healed so well, I can hardly tell where it was. I opted not to have the mass biopsied, as tissue pathology can get expensive, and my dog is 12 years old. According to my vet, the vast majority of skin tags are benign anyway. Hope this was helpful.

Hi! I found this wonderful site last night while searching the Internet for info on skin tags in dogs. My female livernose Rhodesian Ridgeback has a bizarre-looking growth at the base of one of her nipples. It is pink in color and almost the lenght of the nipple but not as thick. The tip is crusty. Could this be a skin tag? I just brought my Basset hound from the vets after four days of IV&meds for acute pancreatitis, and I would not like to go back so soon with the other one...
Thanks in advance for your views/advise!
