how much is the chug dog breed

deenybird Sep 05, 2006 04:52 PM

I saw a chug (chihuahua and pug mix) on tv and it was the cutest dog in the world. You can see some pics of them here: www.chugpuppies.com I was wondering if anyone knew how much a puppy in this breed would cost?

Too much. You can get a mutt at the local animal shelter for probably less than $100, plus you'll save them from being euthanized. I have seen some insanely cute puppies on petfinder, too. That's where my husband and I got our beagle. She's just perfect. You might even find a "chug" puppy there. Designer breeds are just someone's way of making money. I seriously doubt that any ethical breeder would create mixes, just because ethical breeders are out to better their chosen breed, as well as dogs in general, and they know there are too many mixed breed dogs at the pound to justify making more, no matter how cute they are.

I would just like to add that the list of health problems this particular mix is likely to have is LONG. Chis and Pugs have so many problems all their own - crossing two fairly fragile breeds can only result in unhealthy puppies, no matter how healthy the parents seem to be.

I'd be willing to bet that you would spend thousands on vet care for this dog over its lifetime, on top of the ridiculous amount of money that the "breeder" will want for the puppy.. A chronically sick dog is not fun to have - we had a shih tzu that needed shots for skin allergies every 2 weeks, drops in both his eyes twice a day because his tear ducts didn't work, he was on pills twice a day for hypothyroidism and he had serious ear infections requiring antibiotics every day. All of these things for the last 4 years of his life until we finally realized that his quality of life had deteriorated so much that putting him to sleep would be an act of mercy.

All the tests and medications over his life came to well over $12 000, on top of the $800 we paid for him as a puppy. Research the breeds before you get any dog, and take health into consideration. I love mixed breeds but I would NEVER pay a lot of money for a small breed mix. Small breeds are far too unstable on their own..

chug (chihuahua and pug mix)

Well, if you have ever heard the phrase "designer dog" this would be one of them.

A chihuahua/pug breeding will not always produce the cute puppy you saw on TV. A puppy from these two parents could look/act like chihuahua or a pug or any combination of the two.

I'd say, go on www.petfinder.com and search for either a chihuahua or a pug and mixes will come up in that search as well. You'll hit matches that are probably older, but you will be able to see what the dog looks liek as an older dog and get what you are lookign for.

Think about this:
Supply and demand

They'll cost as much as people are willing to pay for them.
Over the internet - puppy merchants usually sell purebred puppies for $ 1,000 dollars and up. Local papers in rural areas usually sell the same type of purebred puppy for $ 350.00 bucks....I know a couple in Manhattan who were happy to pay $1500.00 dollars for a puggle because they couldn't stand the idea of driving 100 miles to Amish Country PA where they could have bought one for $400.00. They figured the trip itself would have cost them $ 1000.00 in lost business, gas, restaurants etc... and it'ts worth $ 1000.00 to get out of a long trip.

The point of my post is this:
There is no intrinsic cash value of a puppy - they're worth what people will pay for them.
You won't pay what they're worth to you-
you'll pay what they're worth to the group of people who - collectively - approach that merchant with "cash in hand".

What do you think they're worth?
