barking barking and more barking

My spayed, 16 month old, female chi likes to bark at strangers, kids, other dogs, cats, squirrels, you name it. She will bark at a person who is 5 houses down. Having company over is a hassle and I cringe everytime someone rings the doorbell because I can't get her to stop barking for anything. I realize that she is probably being protective of me or my 1 year old daughter, but does anyone else have this issue and what have you tried?

Excessive barking is a genetic trait in many breeds. For good ways to handle it, read the article "Barking" at the link below my name. It's a free site, no advertising, no registration--educational, run by veterinarians.
