Bacteria in raw meat

k9lover Oct 03, 2006 09:46 AM

I had a discussion with my puppies doctor yesterday and I told her that I have been giving Dixie some raw ground turkey on a daily basis. She thought that was fine but had a concern that the bacteria in the meat could cause the same problems in my puppy as it does to humans. Is this a concern? Thank you!

Unless a dog has a really underactive immune system it is very, very, very unlikely that the bacteria will cause a problem. Dogs' digestive systems are much more acidic than ours, plus they are shorter, so any bacteria that survives the hostile conditions in the digestive system isn't in the body long enough to reproduce and cause disease.

home of old lady Lucy (boxer/lab/garbage disposal), pretty girl Fancy (beagle), the rats- Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Pachebel, Fillmore, and Norbert, and the mice- Vivaldi, Brahms, Schubert, Bartok, Rasputin, Chaminade, Rosa, Dorothy, Glenda, and Em... I really ought to stop getting more rodents every time I go out, huh?

Some dogs handle raw meat just fine, and others don't. Personally, I wouldn't feed store bought raw meat since I think that is most susceptible to a higher bacteria load from the grinder at the store, but many do feed it with no problem.

The key point would be to know what to look for if problems arise and then treat promptly.
