dog keeps licking the floor

eigna728 Oct 03, 2006 12:48 PM

Our dog is making me crazy! What is wrong with her? About 3 weeks ago I noticed her licking the rug....and licking. She walks at a very slow pace and licks the rug. There are no food crumbs there. When she reaches the end of the rug, she will start on the tiled floor. We tell her no and call her name....try to distract her but she just keeps licking and licking and licking. Really, it is a lot of licking! She will do this for about 30 minutes. Every day she does this. The floor does get vacuumed but fur from our cat still stays. I don't want our dog to get a huge fur ball in her stomach. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with my dog? Is this common? Is my dog just stupid? Anyone else who's dog has this kind of behavior?

It's prime allergy season and licking is one of the signs of an allergy. That's a potential cause so check with your vet about that possibility.

Obsessive compulsive disorders do happen with dogs as well and some breeds are more prone to it than others. Again, a vet needs to be consulted about this problem and then potentially a behaviorist.

Sorry, that's the best I can recommend right now. Hopefully someone else has some other ideas.
