There's really only one actual beagle breed. There are different lines, if that's what you're talking about. Hunting lines will have a different look to them than show lines. I personally like the look of show/pet beagles better. I'll post some pictures of my beagle Fancy at the end of this message. She's my idea of the perfect beagle. The picture you posted looks like some I've seen on breeders' sites. Do buy whatever dog you get from a good, reputable breeder. You will pay more initially, but it's worth it in the long run since good breeders breed for health, temperament, and all-over soundness. Beagles sold out of a newspaper or in a pet store are the result of two random beagles producing puppies, and will surely not turn out to be what you were expecting. They're not carefully bred, they're bred so the dogs' owner can make money. My beagle doesn't howl unless she sees a need to do so- not nearly as often as most beagles. If you keep a beagle inside there's not much to bark or howl at. Kept outside, any dog has a good chance of going nuts and barking at everything they see. Good reason to keep dogs inside! Beagles are wonderful little dogs, but they do have their drawbacks. Read all you can find on them. The best information I've gotten on any breed is from the websites of good breeders. What I did was I looked up the winners at Westminster, and I typed the kennel names of all the winners into Google and I read each of their sites. Not just everybody wins at Westminster, so I have faith that whoever bred the winners knows a ton about their breed and can provide great information. They'll also have pictures of their breeding stock, and you can figure out what kind of beagle you want, what markings, temperament, and what kind of breeder you want to work with.

home of old lady Lucy (boxer/lab/garbage disposal), pretty girl Fancy (beagle), the rats- Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Pachebel, Fillmore, and Norbert, and the mice- Vivaldi, Brahms, Schubert, Bartok, Rasputin, Johann, Chaminade, Dorothy, Glenda, and Em... I really ought to stop getting more rodents every time I go out, huh?
