Manic Licker

We have an 8 year old male short hair standard dachshund who has always been affectionate and a bit of a licker, but lately he has really started licking compulsively. If he is laying in your lap he will just start licking your arm or leg or whatever, non-stop. Is this a sign that he needs something, or is he just showing affection?

Any change in behavior in an adult dog, especially one in the geriatric years (yes, age 8 qualifies), can indicate a medical change. So, he should see his doctor. But he is showing affection, too. Dogs get very clingy when they are not well, at least many of them do.

My two Dachsies lick us until they fall alseep. I think it's a calming mechanism at the end of the day when we're all snuggled into bed together. Their ages are 14 and 13.
