how to potty train an overly shy dog

cee4 Oct 24, 2006 08:43 AM

My Italian Greyhound is not allowed in the livingroom or bedrooms. She will go potty everytime, even in front of us.However in the back den and kitchen she is fine and uses the dog door.I have never been able to resolve this, she is now a little over a year old and really i WOULD love for her to be able to come in the front rooms with us.(we use a gate)
She will NOT potty on the leash, she is too nervous and just shivers. She will potty if I let her out with the other dogs. How do I catch her going potty outside to praise her, how do I train her to use the dog door from the front room.
BTW she is super shy/nervous, and will even run from me if I send even the slightest bit of bad body language..I NEVER yell at her and would never dream of hitting her in any way, not even with a newspaper..

Incredible submissive dogs are tough to deal with at times. You may want to work on building her confidence up by creating a working relationship with you where you are able to reward her lavishly for things she does do well. Take a positive reinforcement class that used clicker training. Teach her she controls the "click" and the reward. You'd be so incredibly suprised how fast a dog that learns they have any control in their lives starts to behave better in other areas of their lives. Then, you can even watch as she goes through the dog door and "click" and reward that behavior as well as her behavior eliminating appropriately outdoors.

Do you leave your dog out until she does urinate? She may in a way be marking where you are, a dominance marking. If she is shy have you considered Obedience school to build up her confidence? I don't know what you clean with but never use Windex type products on those spots. If she is afraid of noise you can try desensitizing her with a radio or TV just a little to loud.

Good Luck
