kibble question

anneh Oct 24, 2006 02:37 PM

I may be adopting a dog and he is currently on Nutro lamb/rice or chicken/rice. I noticed that there is alot of wheat on the ingredient list. He keeps biting/licking his bottom and has no fleas/worms and his anal glands were checked. I am thinking it might be food allergy? For now I want to stick with kibble, if I keep him I may do homemade or BARF. I was thinking of giving him California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato kibble in order to see if it helps. Any thoughts? Thanks for any input.

You could try Innova Evo. It's grain-free and has really good ingredients. Innova and California Natural are made by the same company, Natura, and is also very good. I had some for my rats not long ago, and they really liked it.

Is he on Nutro Max then? I *thought* Nutro Natural didn't have wheat, but it's been a long time since I looked at ingredients.

I agree that this sounds like a food allergy/sensitivity. You could try the kibble that you mentioned. Natural Balance has a few good ones to try out there also.

I switched from nutro natural choice to Innova Evo last year. I like it a lot better than the nutro. I also switched my cats from Nutro Natural choice to chicken soup for the pet lovers soul. The cats have been doing great on that.
Here is a comparision for you.

My dog was on Nutro-max diet when I adopted him. I switched him to Innova, but it seemed to have caused him loose stool. So I switched again to Canidae - which was good. I have been feeding him Canidae and Wellness with no problems. Both are in Whole Dog Journal's top dry kibble list. Whatever you feed your dog, you might want to buy a small bag first and see how he reacts to it.
