Newton wouldn't eat his supplements!

juliana Nov 01, 2006 11:27 PM

I eventually switched Newton from Pettabs to a bunch of goodies, including some cheweable pills (Vetriscience's Canine Plus and Cosequin), B-complex and an antioxidant capsule. He is not very fond of them. I suspect there is more yummy filler in Pettabs than in those pills, but unfortunately less of the ingredients that I am interested in.

I tried to immerse the pills with fish oil, and early on it worked, but no longer. And the antioxidant capsule is a total no-no. I have to fight him twice a day. I wrap the goodies in melted cheese, but often he would eat the cheese and spit the pills out. Very picky boy

I am thinking of trying to grind the pills with freeze dried liver. Any other trick that I should know?

I crush my girls' supplements and put them in their normal food. Haven't had a problem... yet.

Putting the pill in cream cheese tends to work!

I was outsmarted by my boy, he bit through the pill pocket and spit out the capsule. I tried your idea of using cream cheese today, and it worked wonderfully, he didn't even bother biting it. I hope this will be a lasting solution LOL.

Thanks everyone
I found the trick, now he begs for his pills:
- for the cheweable tablets (somewhat palatable but not so much), I grind them with a cube of liver treats, and sprinkle it on his kibbles. He licks the bowl clean :0)
- for the capsule (not palatable), I bought this product that a friend suggested: "Pill Pockets". It is like a dough and I bury the capsule in it and seal it tight. It works better than melted cheese I previously used
