fluffy coat

oliver1 Nov 02, 2006 01:22 PM

My 11 month tri cav has a very fluffy coat. He is neutered. Will his coat always be this way?

Hi! I don't have a Cav but have always admired them. I know their coat is prone to feathering... is this what you mean by being fluffy? Maybe when you can you could post a picture of him?

Thanks. Feathers are the long hairs that grow on the legs and feet. A normal part of a Cavalier's coat. The body usually has a flat smooth coat. Mine has a fluffy coat said by some to be a result of hormone chamges after neutering. I wondered if other cav owners have seen this in their neutered pets.
Thanks

Well hopefully another CKCS owner will happen by and have an answer for you. What does your breeder say about the coat change?

Yes your pup will always have this fuffy coat because he is fixed. you may want to contact a professional groomer to find out if there are any grooming techniques to help reduce the fluff. I personaly haven't delt with the fluff coat because I show my Cav so he's not fixed. You may also want to go to a dog show there are lots of cav owners that bring their fixed dogs to watch the show with them, You'll see them from a mile away because their fluffy coat sticks out like a sore thumb compared to their intact counter parts. Afghan Hounds also get the fluff coat when they are fixed.

Thanks for the info. Conditioning after shampoo and anti-static spray when grooming between helps. It seems to be only on his back and only the black hairs (he's a tri). Head and ears are fine.
People are telling me the fluffiness varies. And is sometimes more on bitches than dogs. What do you know of tbis?
Any info greatly appreciated.
He's adorable - even tempered and smart and is training for a therapy dog which I think he'll be very good at. Coat is one thing but temperament and the lovely face are what I need for this job since I'm not showing or breeding. And he's got both.
Thanks again for your help.
