Wanting info about breeding plz

T1GGY Nov 05, 2006 02:56 PM

Hi there I'm new to this forum this evening.
I am thinking of breeding my minature yorkshire terrier, She is 2 years old, she weighs 5lbs and her name is 'Tisha'
She is the first dog we have ever had, and I would like her to have a litter of pups before we have her done. I am hoping this is going to be an easy thing to go through for her as I am compleatly new to this. My sons, 26 16 14 13 & 10 yrs old are so excited about Tisha becoming a mother. Any advice would be great, thanks in advance. :D

Hi and welcome to the DogHobbyist. I don't have a Yorkie, I have Shiba Inus but generally check out the other breed boards. It's great that you are seeking out some advice about breeding but it's also a subject matter that can become a little touchy with some people so be prepared. If it were me unless you had access to the breeder you got your little girl from I wouldn't breed her. Being she is so little there can be a multitude of problems and not being an expert myself it would still be my opinion that it wouldn't be an easy thing for her to go through. If you are still going to plan on breeding her please seek the advice of an established and most important of all... a reputable breeder. The health and well being of your little girl will depend on it. Good Luck... Tisha is absolutely adorable.

Thank you for the nice compliment. You can visit the Photo Gallery here and see many more pictures not only of my Shibas but the other members as well. It would be great to see some more picts of your little girl. Being a registered member you have access to a free 10mb photo account here at the DogHobbyist.

Dogs this size are at very high risk of death from breeding. If you're not prepared for it to kill her, truthfully, you should not breed her. It might seem that breeding is a natural thing, but in dogs this size, it is the farthest thing from natural. Talk to your veterinarian, and let the vet know that you want the real truth about the risks. Otherwise, because vets need to keep clients and that income, they will often let you believe whatever you want to believe rather than argue with you to try to get you to understand something you don't want to hear in the first place.

Also, ask about the cost of a C-section. And then ask what it costs if your dog needs it done during emergency hours. Be prepared for a shock. Buying another puppy is cheaper, and it also preserves your dog's nice temperament as well as sparing her the risk of death.

I have an article on Breeding Your Dog and one on Spay/Neuter Behavior Benefits at the link below my name, a free veterinary educational site with no advertising.

Thank you so very much for your reply.
You have certainly given me much to think about, The safety of Tisha comes first in my eyes but I will have a word with her vet when we next go.
Once again thanks :D
