Ivermectin

sgsmith2 Nov 08, 2006 05:02 PM

Does anyone know anything about using a very small dose of ivermectin orally to treat demodectic mange for a very small dog (3.5lb, 10 month old, female chihuahua). I was just curious as this was a suggestion from the vet to cure demodectic mange.

Thanks,

Steven

It's safer than the arsenic they used to use! But in a tiny dog, anything is an extra risk, so your carefulness is wise. If she were mine, I'd ask the vet to do a blood screening for the basic values from liver, kidneys, white counts, red blood cells, etc., as one more precaution since her little body has already been through other stuff.

I use Ivermectin on all three of my dogs. 1 including a Chihuahua. Ivermectin is the same as one of the major heart worm medicines. I can't remember which one.

I use the general rule of 0.01 cc's for each pound of pup.

but I would (and did) check with the vet first to make sure there is no other issues with your pup.
