switching allergic dog to raw

Brit38 Nov 15, 2006 06:04 PM

Almost a month ago I adopted a 10mo neut dog who was already biting/nibbling/licking rump/tail/hind legs/inner thighs when I got him. Had a vet check him for fleas/mites/worms etc. He was being fed Nutro which had lamb/rice and chicken/rice. So I switched him to raw but not sure if I should avoid those two proteins. Not feeding him grains or root veggies at least for now. Have been giving him one large meal of raw ground turkey/zuccini and another small meal of steamed white fish/pumpkin plus vit B/C/E/salmon oil/borage oil/small amount cod liver oil/zinc daily. He has not improved at all re the itching in fact seemed to get worse recently. I give him 4 1,000mg salmon oil caps (he weighs 50lb). I thought I would keep him to these proteins for a month. I groom him daily (he is smooth coated labX) and swab him with herbal teas. I have an appt with holistic vet next week but wondering what I can do to ease his itching. This morning he woke me up at 4am going at it! I don't want him to suffer but I do hope I won't have to resort to giving him drugs in order to help him as I like to do things holistically. He has no hair loss or sore spots so far. He is only 10mo (neut). Thanks for any help for him. I feel abit down about it, I guess I thought when I got him that I could help him and now wondering if I will be able to

Where did you adopt the dog? Can they give you any information? I would personally would take the dog back to the vet and have allergy test done.
