Exercise needs

sunnyjim Nov 28, 2006 02:36 AM

My 8 month old is very active and never seems to get tired. He is taken for a half hour walk in the morning and a half hour walk in the evening. Sometimes i give him a 10 minute jog on top of this. The thing is i still dont think he is tired enough. He sleeps all day and then is back up in the evenings and ready to play. He whines if i am not with him all the time in the evenings. My question is whether or not they become a bit less active after the age of 1 or whether they become more active? Also do i need to exercise him more? I do find it hard as i do not have that much extra time.

It's great that you're exercising your dog. I don't have a doberman, but my dog was very, very active as a puppy. She's almost four now and not quite as active, but she still requires three walks a day and some play time. Can you play fetch in the house or in the yard? (Do you have a fenced yard?) When my dog has exercised a lot and still needs more attention, I sometimes give her a stuffed Kong (a little peanut butter and kibble stuffed inside), which keeps her busy. Other people I know have two dogs and the dogs playing together tire each other out.

TO add to these ideas, you may want to try some training- sometimes tiring out the brain works as well as or even better than tiring out the body. Also, a dobe needs more than walks- 30 minutes of running would be more appropriate twice a day. These are althetic dogs that like to work out.
